Students in N.B. learn about the election process
They may not be eligible to vote yet but thanks to an election program, when the time comes these students will be ready.
Students from John Paul ll Collegiate in North Battleford took part in a mock election this week. They researched candidates running for city council and set up voting booths. Replicas of the ballot used in the municipal election were provided and students were asked to cast their vote the same way a registered voter would at an official poll.
Teacher Laura Wells said it is an amazing program and plans to use it again.
“The whole idea of voting can be intimidating and they don’t know what to expect,” Wells said. “Sometimes they don’t understand just how important voting is. For years people had to fight to be able to vote and now for people to be nonchalant about voting is really sad.”
