Beavers push Cardinals to brink, but loss ends season

Jul 18, 2017 | 10:00 AM

They gave it all they had in last night’s do-or-die game against the Unity Cardinals, but in the end, the North Battleford Beavers were eliminated from the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League playoffs following a 5-2 loss.

The Beavers entered the playoffs as an underdog, claiming the seventh seed in their final game of the regular season, and found themselves up against the 10-4 Cardinals, a team with a wealth of pitching that turned out to be the difference.

In game one of the best-of-three series, ace Rhett Feser limited North Battleford to one run, as the Cardinals came away with a dominant 10-1 win.

In Monday’s decisive third game, Feser was on the mound again for Unity. Although the Beavers got a couple runs on him early, that was all they were able to muster for the evening.

“That was the third game we’ve faced him this year and we definitely probably hit him the most last night,” Beavers player Rory Gregoire said. “Guys were adjusting their swings and getting more contact but… he was throwing harder as the game went on and was getting a few more strikeouts.”

Unity jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Beavers responded with two runs in the top of the second.

It was 4-2 after four innings, and that was about when Feser really started to find his groove.

“He started off not his best, that we’ve seen, and then, probably in the fourth or fifth, you could tell it was coming in a little bit faster and we had more strikouts towards the end,” Gregoire said. “It was a tight game all the way.”

Gregoire said the fact that three of the four first-round series in the league have needed a third game shows how close this league has gotten in the past few years.

“We’ve kind of learnt over the past few years that all you’ve got to do is get into the playoffs and anything can happen,” he said. “Definitely parity has gotten better. It doesn’t matter where you finish in the top-eight.

“It’s very tight and it makes for fun baseball, that’s for sure.”

Next up for the Beavers is provincials in Standard Hill from Aug. 11-13.

“It’ll be a fun tournament and highly competitive,” Gregoire said. “The biggest challenge for us, we have three to four weeks before that, is… we’ll have to get back to practicing and getting in some exhibition games just to keep the arms in shape, especially the pitchers.”

There very well could be some exhibition games against other NSRBL teams who get knocked out of the playoffs, such as Wilkie, Macklin or Standard Hill. Meadow Lake is already out and will also be looking to get some action in before provincials, as they will be in the same division.
