STRONG FINISH

Battlefords disc golfer reflects on successful season

The disc golf season has come to an end, and Battlefords competitor Cole Tenetuik finished first in the mixed amateur division at the Thrill at the Hill tournament in Martensville in his final event of the year.

“I found it went well. I played probably one of the most consistent tournaments I’ve ever played,” said Tenetuik, who won by 12 strokes, finished six-under-par and shot a tournament-best 57 in the final round.

“From minus five and wind on Saturday to no wind and plus 15 on Sunday, I definitely had to fight through different weather conditions. But I was able to manage it pretty well, stay consistent and score well.”

The Battlefords disc golfer said the open course and its longer holes suited his game.

“I’m a distance thrower, and when there’s not a lot of trees in the way, I can seem to strive pretty well. With my game plan and how I execute, it really fit into my, I guess, my game plan on how I throw.”

Tenetuik won three of the four events he played in, but said his biggest accomplishment of the year was winning the NADGT Nationals on home soil.

“That was one of the biggest highlights of the season for sure. Then, honestly, just being able to find consistency in my game and prove to myself that I can compete with the higher-calibre players of Saskatchewan and hopefully jump up into the pro division starting next year and not make a complete fool of myself.”

Heading into the off-season, Tenetuik is prepared to get out to the course as much as he can, even in inclement weather.

“We still tend to get out for rounds in the winter, trudge through the snow and throw discs. We also have nets and stuff. One of my buddies actually just acquired a simulator for disc golf. So, we’ll probably look at setting that up for the winter and trying to keep the game a little crisp for us and not have too much downtime.”

After a season in which he didn’t compete as much as he would have liked, Tenetuik is hoping to be more active next year.

“I’m trying to participate in more tournaments and get more playing time. This year was probably the slowest year I had for playing in events.”

Tenetuik finishes the season with a PDGA rating of 952.
