Battlefords Sharks head to Calgary Firestarter tournament ahead of the season
A season after finishing one goal shy of their first appearance at nationals, the Battlefords WPD Ambulance Sharks are ready to get back in the saddle at the Calgary Firestarter, one of the premier tournaments in girls hockey, running Sept. 10 to 13.
The Sharks won the tournament last year to kick off the season. While head coach Nolan Horbach doesn’t want that to change his squad’s approach to the tournament, he admitted it is something he has thought about.
“The returning Sharks, they’ve got every intention of coming back and going back-to-back, which I absolutely love. For our new Sharks, it’s just understanding that it took a lot to have that much success, but we’ve got these other mentors now that are going to do everything they can to help them get there,” he said.
“The mindset definitely changes, but for us it’s a good chance to make sure that we can understand how we can flip that switch and go from competing at a high level day-to-day against each other to taking it into a game and doing the things we need to do to have success.”
