Prince Albert trial hears about man accused of illegal hunting, sold deer meat to immigrants

One of the men charged after a nearly 18-month-long investigation openly admitted to an undercover conservation officer that he illegally sold young deer meat to Muslims for Ramadan and collected $200.

That was among the evidence heard at the trial for Wyatt and Brody Sinclair, which continued Monday afternoon at Prince Albert Provincial Court. The undercover officer who developed a friendship with Wyatt Sinclair was called to testify.

The investigation in the MacDowall area ran from March 2023 to November 2024 and resulted in dozens of charges under the provincial Wildlife Act.

Describing conversations he had with Wyatt Sinclair, the officer, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, said Sinclair confessed to a number of illegal hunting activities, including not wearing his “colours” while hunting, not having a license, hunting under someone else’s treaty rights, and driving while suspended.

He also shot a moose while sitting in a vehicle and recorded the incident. The short camera phone video was played for the courtroom and shows him firing three shots. The moose collapses in a field and a female passenger in the vehicle can be heard laughing.

Sinclair also bragged about an elk he shot on private land near One Arrow First Nation, where he was not granted access. With respect to the selling of wildlife meat to the Muslims, Wyatt said he was paid $200.

Over the course of 12 months, the undercover officer hung out with either one or both of the brothers on numerous occasions and went on several hunts together.

The trial, which started last March, is expected to wrap up by the end of the week. Among the key arguments expected to be raised by the defence is the issue of entrapment.

Both Brody and Wyatt Sinclair sat in the courtroom and were supported by family members.

Brody Sinclair, while charged with Wyatt, was described as participating in one incident that occurred in October 2024, but was essentially getting “caught in the net.”
