The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is keeping an eye on several new wildfire starts due to lighting activity over the last few days.

Newly confirmed fires as of Friday included five in the Northern Response Area, which are all under one hectare in size and being actioned by helicopters and initial attack crews.

There were also two new fires in the Western Response Area, including the Durocher fire, burning north of Meadow Lake. It measured 4 hectares in size on Friday afternoon and was caused by lightning.

As for previously reported wildfires, the largest one burning in the province right now continues to be the Lobstick fire, which has charred nearly 19,000 hectares since it started several weeks ago, but is now considered contained.

As of 3 p.m. on Friday, there were 45 active wildfires in the province; 22 remained under assessment as officials gathered information on their size and behaviour, while one fire was being managed with crews focused on protecting nearby values, like infrastructure.

There have been 165 wildfires year to date in Saskatchewan. That’s well below last year’s total at this time, when there were 272.
