Japan leads 2-0 at halftime and, so far, the firing of Tunisia coach Sabri Lamouchi following Monday’s 5-1 loss to Sweden — and the hiring of veteran French coach Herve Renard — has not provided much spark for the Eagles of Carthage.

Less than four minutes into the match in Mexico and Japan takes a 1-0 lead over Tunisia on a goal from Daichi Kamada.

Fans at Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico, are pumped up for the final World Cup match of the day — a Group F showdown between Tunisia and Japan. Tunisia lost its opener, while Japan had a draw in its first game.

Despite outshooting Curaçao 26-10 (15-4 shots on target) and controlling possession (75 per cent to 25), Ecuador has to settle for a scoreless draw. Both teams have a draw and a loss.

With 15 minutes left in the second half, Ecuador and Curaçao — both with 0-1 records — are still scoreless. Ecuador remains in control of the shots 23-10 (13-4 on target) and 74 per cent of ball possession.

Fans and pre-game festivities are in full gear as Ecuador and Curaçao prepare to kick off their Group E match in Kansas City, Mo.

Deniz Undav scored his second goal of the match in stoppage time to give Germany a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast. Undav had also scored in the 68th minute to tie the match 1-1. The victory helps Germany solidify its lead atop Group E with two wins and a plus-7 goal differential.

Franck Kessie scored in the 30th minute to give Ivory Coast a 1-0 lead over Germany at half time. Kessie fired the ball into the back of the net after it deflected off a German defender and right to the Ivorian midfielder’s feet.

Brazil’s Raphinha will undergo treatment on a hamstring injury with the hope of him returning to the World Cup, the national team says. The Barcelona forward left late in the first half of the team’s win over Haiti on last night in Philadelphia after receiving medical attention.

4:24 p.m.

Fans at Toronto Stadium loudly booed as on-field referees stopped play for the hydration break approximately 25 minutes into the match between Germany and Ivory Coast. The mandatory break was instituted for this World Cup to help with high temperatures in the southern United States and Mexico but it was only 24 C with 31 per cent humidity in downtown Toronto when the whistle was blown.

Play is underway at Toronto Stadium as Germany faces Ivory Coast in Group E action. Germany had possession to start the first half. Germany is atop the group after a 7-1 rout of Curaçao. Ivory Coast is second after a 1-0 victory over Ecuador.

3:15 p.m.

Thousands of Germany and Ivory Coast fans have gathered in Toronto with the two nations set to meet. Toronto’s waterfront was a sea of black, red and yellow as rapturous German fans marched toward the stadium ahead of the tilt. Flags bobbed atop a roaring sea of fans who chanted in unison to the team’s high-energy anthem, “Super Deutschland olé!”

the Netherlands has gone top of Group F with a dominant win over Sweden. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scored a brace in a resounding 5-1 victory. The Dutch now have four points after two games, while Sweden has three.

An unexpected meet-and-greet with Canada’s captain. Alphonso Davies is meeting fans at The Brick Park Royal in West Vancouver, from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Vancouver time. Davies has yet to play in the World Cup due to a hamstring injury, but was available off the bench on Thursday.

Brian Brobbey has the Netherlands up 2-0 against Sweden at halftime. Brobbey converted a pass from Cody Gakpo in the fifth minute before adding his second with a deflection in the 17th. Sweden appeared to bring one goal back in the 45 minute — but officials ruled the play offside.

The Qatar Football Association posted on social media to wish Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné well in his recovery. Qatar’s Assim Madibo tackled Koné from behind early in the second half of Canada’s 6-0 win on Thursday, breaking Koné’s leg in two places. Madibo, who received a red card, later entered the Canadian dressing room to personally apologize to Koné and his teammates.

the Netherlands and Sweden have kicked off at Houston Stadium. the Netherlands played Japan to a 2-2 draw in its Group F opener. Sweden began the tournament with a 5-1 win over Tunisia.

Ismaël Koné is back with his Canadian teammates. Canada Soccer released a heartwarming video this morning showing Koné returning to the team hotel after undergoing surgery to repair his broken leg. With a cast on his left leg, Koné exits a van on crutches as teammates clap, cheer and chant, “Is-ma-ël!”

Koné was injured following a tackle early in the second half of Thursday’s 6-0 win over Qatar. The 24-year-old from Montreal was stretchered off the field and underwent surgery later that night. Canada Soccer said yesterday that the operation was successful and that Koné is expected to make a full recovery, though he will miss the remainder of the tournament.

Canadians are tuning in. Canada’s win over Qatar drew an average of 5.3 million viewers, TSN announced, making it the country’s most-watched World Cup group-stage match. Overall, 11.7 million unique Canadian viewers tuned in for some part of the game. It’s also the most-watched World Cup game since the 2014 final.

Four World Cup matches are on tap today, including a marquee fixture in Toronto. Germany faces Ivory Coast this afternoon at Toronto Stadium after opening Group E play with a 7-1 rout of Curaçao. Ivory Coast scored a stoppage-time winner to top Ecuador 1-0 and sits second in the group. The match is the third of six total games being played in Toronto.

Elsewhere, the Netherlands and Sweden kick off today’s action in Houston. Ecuador then takes on Curaçao in Kansas City this evening before Japan meets Tunisia late tonight in Guadalupe, Mexico. Sweden leads Group F after thumping Tunisia 5-1 in its opener.

Canada has the day off before returning to training tomorrow ahead of Wednesday’s group-play finale. The Canadian men can secure first place in Group B with a win or a draw against Switzerland at Vancouver’s B-C Place Stadium. Finishing atop the group would keep Canada in Vancouver for its Round of 32 match, while a loss would leave its position in the standings to be determined.
