North Battleford’s Chapel Gallery is showcasing a collection of artwork created by students from Notre Dame Elementary School, exploring themes of identity, culture and personal strengths.

The exhibit, From Many People’s Strength, features pieces by students from pre-kindergarten to Grade 7. Through a variety of artistic styles and mediums, students examined the positive qualities they see in themselves and those around them.

“We felt it was a really great fit because it had a lot of different areas that students and teachers could explore for a theme,” said Theresa Eppich, a teacher at the school. “You could look at personal identity and your own strengths. You could look at the strengths we have as a community and our cultures and families and all the things that everyone brings together.”

Eppich said the exhibit gave students a chance to share their creativity beyond the classroom.

“For some students that really are passionate about art, it was pretty cool for them to say like, ‘Wow, look there’s all this other beautiful art, and then mine’s here too in this gallery’; it felt so special to them.”

The display features a wide range of artwork reflecting both the students’ ages and the different approaches taken by teachers. Eppich said students’ understanding of strengths evolves as they grow older, resulting in varied perspectives throughout the exhibit.

“As we mature, we have different ways of looking at things. When we’re little, we might think everyone’s good at everything, or big people are good at everything. It’s going to be very different as to how you’re able to see your strengths and the strengths of others as someone who’s in grades 5, 6 or 7,” Eppich explained.

From Many People’s Strength remains on display at North Battleford’s Chapel Gallery until June 21.
