In 2008, Mike Carlson began volunteering with the Cochin Community Players.

He started by building sets and furniture for productions before expanding his skills to the lighting department, where he remained a dedicated volunteer until his passing in 2025.

For his contributions to community theatre, Carlson was posthumously awarded Theatre Saskatchewan’s Volunteer Champion of the Year award.

“Mike was a private person and did not ask for a lot of attention on himself,” said Tanya Montoya, a member of the group who worked closely with him. “In fact, if he was around for the prize, I believe he would say that he had a great team of carpenters with him to assist him in building the sets and he would recognize the contributions of others.”

Montoya said Carlson was always willing to lend a hand and took pride in his work.

“We felt it was so important to have him nominated because the people on stage and people in the forefront get a lot of attention, but the people in the background sometimes get missed. We wanted to make sure that we paid attention to his hard work,” she said.

To honour his contributions, the group also renamed its lighting booth Mike’s Lights.

“It was something that we could guarantee with every production that he would be there,” Montoya said. “Having proper lighting for a show really makes a big difference, and we knew we could count on him to do it, and he would do it well.”

Montoya said Carlson’s impact on the organization was significant despite his preference to stay out of the spotlight. She said the award and dedication recognize the countless hours he devoted to the theatre and reflect the Cochin Community Players’ gratitude for his years of service.
