HONOURING LOVED ONES

Suicide Awareness Walk returns to Battlefords area

May 31, 2026 | 12:01 PM

Community members from across the Battlefords will gather on June 6 for the fifth annual Suicide Awareness Walk, an event focused on honouring loved ones lost to suicide and raising awareness about mental health.

For organizer Elvin Nicotine, the walk is deeply personal.

“My son committed suicide June 15th, 2020, in the Battlefords,” Nicotine said. “I want to prevent people from feeling how I’m feeling.”

Nicotine said the inspiration for the walk came after meeting a man in Prince Albert who was walking to Lac La Ronge to raise awareness for suicide prevention and mental health.

“It inspired me, that guy. After thinking about it for a few days, the following year, I told my family that I want to do something like that.”

What began as a way to honour his son has since grown into an annual event that brings people together through shared grief and support.

“People that are still grieving, they would come on the walk. We all have similar experiences and feelings; it’s all part of us,” Nicotine said.

The walk also serves as a way for Nicotine to celebrate his late son’s birthday while coping with the emotions that come with the loss.

“It’s a mixed feeling of honoring him and at the same time have those emotions come back again, those grieving feelings. At the end we all hug and we try to go and live our lives the best way we can.”

The walk will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the Battleford Bridge and conclude at the Red Pheasant Cree Nation Hall.
