Women Entrepreneurs Week highlights Sask. farm ambassador

“A lot of times, especially in farming, people look at you and ask, ‘Where’s the man in charge?’”

That’s one of the biggest challenges Lisa Haynes has faced as a woman entrepreneur in agriculture.

“When you’re in a male-dominated industry, people automatically look for the man. Sometimes you really have to earn your seat at the table.”

Haynes, owner of Farm Systems for Success, is one of several women being recognized during Women Entrepreneurs Week in Saskatchewan.

“I’m the person I wish I’d had 20 years ago when we first started farming,” she explained. “I help younger people getting into agriculture put systems in place so they can succeed and feel less overwhelmed.”

Over the past three years, Haynes has found encouragement and connection through Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan (WESK). She first became involved through free business classes and later took on the role of rural ambassador, helping support other women entrepreneurs across the province.

“Honestly, it’s uplifting. A lot of people don’t know how to get their name out there or make connections. WESK gives us that platform.”

For those just entering the farming industry, Haynes says building relationships and asking questions is key.

“There are so many people willing to help, share tips, and offer ideas that worked for them. Get out there, network, and talk to people in the industry because most people want to see others succeed.”

She adds the most rewarding part of entrepreneurship is combining passion with purpose.

“I think it’s exciting to do something you’re passionate about, and being able to help other people along the way is really important to me. I think it’s just nice to have some recognition; just to be able to say, ‘there are women out there that are running successful businesses.’”
