The On Air for Health Care Radiothon is now underway in the Battlefords, raising money this year for upgrades to the dialysis unit at Battlefords Union Hospital (BUH).

The 12-hour fundraiser began this morning at 6 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. across 93.3 Beach Radio, Q98 and CJNB/CJNS, with live broadcasts from the hospital lobby.

This year’s campaign supports dialysis patients, many of whom spend hours connected to machines that do the work their kidneys no longer can.

Donations can be made throughout the day by calling 306-446-6652, in person at the hospital, or online through the Battlefords Healthcare Foundation website.

Dr. Ayesha Ahmed, who treats kidney disease patients across northern Saskatchewan, said dialysis becomes a lifeline for many patients living with kidney failure.

“Because obviously, kidneys are a vital organ, and it’s something we can’t live without. So yes, it’s a very vital process,” Ahmed said.

She said most hemodialysis patients undergo treatment for about four hours at least three times a week. Across Saskatoon, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Meadow Lake, La Ronge, Flin Flon and Tisdale, Ahmed said there are about 510 patients currently receiving dialysis treatment.

Funds raised during the radiothon will go toward improving comfort for patients, who often spend hours sitting mostly motionless during treatment.

Donation totals will be updated throughout the day.
