CSOs advise caution about increased use of scooters in North Battleford

As the weather warms up, there has been a notable increase in the ways that people are getting around town. Community Safety Officers (CSOs) have noticed a specific increase in the number of people using scooters in North Battleford and have released an advisory on responsible practice for operating them.

Whether or not they are operated with or without motors or battery power, scooters are considered “vehicles” under the City’s Traffic Bylaw No. 1946. Like bicycles, scooters are not allowed on sidewalks and must be used on roadways.

When travelling on the street, people using scooters must obey the road rules, including stopping for pedestrians at crosswalks, following the speed limit, signalling when turning and stopping at stop signs.

Over the past few days, there have been several instances reported to CSOs of people riding scooters who have failed to obey stop signs, which nearly led to collisions with motor vehicles. As a result, CSOs will be paying close attention to these specific violations in the coming weeks to discourage unsafe actions on the road and educate users.
