Battlefords Pickleball Club to host their spring tournament this weekend

On April 25-26, the NationsWEST fieldhouse will be filled with pickleball players from all over for the Battlefords Pickleball Spring tournament.

This year, the tournament is being held in memorial of Karen Williams, a member of the club who sadly passed away in December after a long battle with cancer.

The field house will host more than 65 teams of all ages in different skill categories and divisions.

“We have two to 2.9, which is kind of a beginner, out having fun,” said tournament director Brad Wuitchik. “Then we go 3 to 3, 4. which is kind of an advanced beginner. Three, four and up, that’s the advanced intermediate. So, we don’t run age classes. You got a guy like me at 60 plus years old, maybe playing against a guy that’s 27.”

While there are a lot of local teams, the tournament will also welcome players from surrounding areas to town.

“We’ll go up to Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, all the other surrounding areas…lots from Unity, all these little clubs around here, they send people,” said Wuitchik.

This year, the tournament has a good mix of people playing in each division in singles and doubles competitions.

“We had a good turnout. The mixed three to four (and) up is good. Ladies is an increase from last year. Men’s doubles is always popular. This year we ran a men’s single. That was really successful. We had 12 guys sign up for that,” Wuitchik said.

A spring tournament takes a fair share of volunteers to run smoothly.

“We have a registration desk for about an hour. That’s just people marking off when they come in, they check in, we make sure that they show up. We have court monitors, making sure that all the teams have balls and make sure the starting servers are identified,” said Wuitchik.

For anyone that wants to attend and watch the tournament, attendance is completely free at the field house as the club encourages people to come and watch and check out what pickleball is all about.

“It’s an addicting sport. We get people. We made a lot of friends and stuff like that from all over… come out and enjoy the sport. There are all kinds of levels and all ages. They play every day. We have lessons,” Wuitchik said.

The spring tournament, in memorial of Karen Williams, aims to bring more eyes onto pickleball in Saskatchewan as the field house hosts local and travelling teams.
