A seniors-only housing building in North Battleford is being converted into a mixed-use complex aimed at expanding access for lower-income residents.

In a release Friday, the Government of Saskatchewan said Valleyview Tower II will shift from seniors’ social housing to a model that includes individuals and families with low to moderate incomes.

Social Services Minister Terry Jenson said the change is meant to increase housing availability in the community.

“We are taking a new and innovative approach to expand safe and affordable housing and give more individuals and families a place to call home,” Jenson said.

Under the model, tenants who may not qualify for social housing will be eligible for units in the building. Rent is set at $870 per month for a one-bedroom unit and $1,000 for a two-bedroom, including utilities and internet.

Valleyview Tower II has 89 units, including 81 one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom suites.

Seniors currently living in the building can remain or receive support to move to nearby Valleyview Tower I, which will continue to operate as seniors’ social housing.

The province said the change will allow vacant units to be used to meet demand from non-seniors and small families.

Applications open May 1 through the Battlefords Housing Authority. Applicants will be income-tested and accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
