MP Falk slams Liberal majority as ‘backroom deals’ after historic shift
Battlefords–Lloydminster–Meadow Lake MP Rosemarie Falk is criticizing the Liberal government’s shift to a majority, saying Canadians “did not vote for this Liberal majority government.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals reached 174 seats in the House of Commons on April 13 – enough for a majority – after winning three by-elections and gaining support from MPs who crossed the floor.
That makes Carney’s the first federal government in Canada’s history to move from a minority to a majority between elections.
Since last year, five MPs have joined the Liberals from opposition parties, including former Conservative Marilyn Gladu, who crossed earlier this month. Other additions include Conservatives Matt Jeneroux, Michael Ma and Chris d’Entremont, as well as former NDP MP Lori Idlout.
