NORTH STARS SEASON COMES TO AN END

North Stars eliminated from the playoffs with 6-3 game seven loss to the Yorkton Terriers

Apr 16, 2026 | 12:47 AM

After a back-and-forth game seven and series, the Battlefords North Stars season has come to a heartbreaking end.

The North Stars fell in game seven of the SJHL semifinals, 6-3 to the Yorkton Terriers in Yorkton. The North Stars came back from down 3-0 to tie it, but Gabin Bartha scored the game winning goal with less than four minutes left to go in the third period to advance the Terriers to the Canterra Seeds Cup Final.

Yorkton moves on to face the Flin Flon Bombers for the 2026 Canterra Seeds Cup.

The Terriers got on the board first when Vinay Junek brought the puck in on the right-hand side, going across the crease and sliding it past Kaeden Serpa to make it 1-0 for the Terriers 5:08 into the first period.

At the 7:09 mark, William Leonard doubled the lead for the Terriers, getting loose on a quick breakaway and going backhand-forehand on Serpa to make it 2-0 before the North Stars got a single shot off.

The North Stars built some momentum towards the end of the frame but couldn’t get any past Terriers goaltender Callum Creig through the first 20.

After one: 2-0 Terriers

Yorkton went up 3-0 just 1:10 into the second period. Serpa came across the crease to rob Gabriel Courchesne, but the save pulled him out of position. The puck popped out to Gavin Bartha in the slot who scored to give the Terriers the three-goal lead.

The North Stars got one back at the 10:42 mark when Alex Coventry took a pass in the slot from Josh Knittig before going to the backhand and sliding it in to make it 3-1.

Coventry scored his second goal of the game later in the frame at 17:02. Finlay Klippenstein found Coventry in the slot, and he made no mistake cutting the lead to 3-2 Terriers.

At 18:38, the North Stars tied up the game with their nicest passing play of the entire season. Carter Geysen entered the zone, found Kaleb Dewar. Dewar to Kobe Sawyer, to Will Kirwan, back to Geysen and Geysen found the back of the net.

After being down 3-0, the North Stars took a tie game into the third period.

After two: Tied 3-3

The North Stars best opportunity to take the lead came when they got a 1:06 five-on-three powerplay but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

After that, the third period remained scoreless until the 16:04 mark, when Gavin Bartha scored his second of the period, top shelf from the point to make it 4-3 with the eventual game winning goal.

Jake Briltz and Junek scored empty net goals to put the nail in the coffin, and the Terriers came out victorious in game seven.

Final score: 6-3 Terriers

Series: 4-3 Terriers

As the North Stars season comes to an end, they have five players aging out and completing their junior hockey career.

  • #29 W Josh Knittig, Assistant captain
  • #9 D Gavin Granger, Assistant captain
  • #4 C Alessio Nardelli, Assistant captain
