North Battleford Legion opens applications for 2026 Veterans Banner Program

The North Battleford Legion is accepting 20 applications for their 2026 Veterans Banner Program.

The banners showcased during this program help to feature local veterans and will be hung from October to November, down 100th Street in North Battleford.

For many in the community, including Legion secretary Louise Oster, these banners hold a special memory.

“My dad was a veteran, and my family bought the banner the first year we did this. Every year when it’s hung up there, it just makes my heart go pitter-patter, it’s just a good feeling to remember my father that way,” said Oster.

She encourages other families or veterans to join in on the local tradition, which was originally started in Battleford by the Fred Light Museum.

“It’s just a way of remembering all the sacrifices that the veterans have made for us and it’s an honor to do this, to be able to remember them. When you see the banner, it’s a really good feeling to know that you are doing something to help remember all the veterans that have given so much for us.”

Community members have until Aug 15 to submit their applications to the Legion, but it will run on a first come, first serve basis.

“There is a cost of $250. Angie Fredrich in Battleford makes them, and that is the actual cost of the banner,” said Oster. “When the city takes them back, we wash them down and hang them up straight, so they stay in really good condition. They will then be used for the next five years.”
