The Battlefords North Stars have gone up 2-1 in the SJHL semifinals against the Yorkton Terriers with a win at home in game three.

“I thought our structure and our systems were really good,” said North Stars assistant coach Owen Lamb postgame. “We made some in-game adjustments and obviously a great performance from Serpa so a lot to be happy about tonight’s win.”

Serpa stopped 29 of the 31 shots that he saw in the win.

The North Stars got on the board first. At 13:52 of the opening frame, a scramble in front bought Callum Creig down and out of position. The puck popped in front of the net to Josh Knittig who found Finlay Klippenstein, and Klippenstein backhanded the puck past Creig to give the North Stars a 1-0 lead.

At 16:08 Thomas Ries found Vinay Junek in the offensive zone and streaked towards the net. Junek passed the puck back to Ries, and he scored blocker side passed Serpa to even the game with a few minutes left in the opening frame.

After one: Tied 1-1

The North Stars took a 2-1 lead in the second period on the only power play opportunity of the frame. After Ries took a slashing call early on, the North Stars elected to send their second unit out for the man advantage.

Fisher had the puck close to the point and passed it across the ice to Owen Nelson on the doorstep, and Nelson scored his fourth of the playoffs to give the North Stars the lead at 3:10.

The teams were at a stalemate for the rest of the period, and the North Stars took the one-goal advantage into the second period.

After two: 2-1 North Stars

Ries scored his second goal of the game just 3:12 into the period, taking a pass from Gabriel Courchesne and scoring short side over Serpa’s blocker to tie the game, 2-2 at 3:12.

Anthony Campbell scored the eventual game winning goal at 6:49, taking a pass in front of the net from Klippenstein and scoring over a sprawling Creig to make it 3-2.

The Terriers pulled the goalie in the final minute, but the North Stars survived a final push to win game three.

Final score: 3-2 North Stars

Series: 2-1 North Stars

Knittig had two assists in the game, keeping him at a pace of more than two points per game. The North Stars forward now has 17 points (6G-11A) in eight games throughout the playoffs.

The North Stars will have an opportunity to take a commanding 3-1 series lead when they host the Terriers for game four of the semifinals on April 8, puck drop at 7:30.
