Progress on Humboldt Broncos memorial continues eight years after tragic crash

As another anniversary approaches, the memory of the 2017–18 Humboldt Broncos remains close to the hearts of many, reflected in ongoing efforts to create spaces for remembrance and healing.

The Humboldt Broncos Memorial Committee provided an update on several tribute projects ahead of the 8th anniversary of the April 6, 2018 bus crash.

Work continues at the crash site, where asphalt for a parking lot and pathways has now been tendered and is expected to be completed this year. The committee said this marks an important step in making the site more accessible for visitors wishing to reflect and pay their respects.

Initial site preparation began in October 2024 and included earth moving, the creation of pathways, and the development of a sitting area.

The next phase of the project will focus on building a monument to honour the 16 people who lost their lives and the 13 others who were injured and forever impacted.

The memorial site is located about 170 kilometres northeast of Humboldt, at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335 near Tisdale.

Meanwhile, planning continues in Humboldt for a future recreation facility that will include tribute elements. The City is working with the newly formed Rec-Create Committee, a community-driven group focused on developing the project.

While the original Tribute Centre proposal did not receive a major construction grant, the City said the vision of creating a meaningful community space remains. Plans for the facility include incorporating elements that reflect the global support Humboldt received in the weeks and months following the tragedy.

“Eight years later, we continue to carry the memory of the 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos with us in everything we do,” said Mayor Rob Muench. “These projects are about more than remembrance; they are about creating spaces where families, residents, and visitors can reflect, heal, and feel connected.”

The City said it remains committed to ensuring all memorial initiatives are handled with care, respect, and intention.

Those interested in volunteering or contributing financially to the projects can do so through the Humboldt Broncos Tribute Campaign website.
