North Battleford backs Red Pheasant bid for new band office study

Apr 2, 2026 | 3:37 PM

The City of North Battleford has agreed to partner with Red Pheasant Cree Nation to support a federal funding application for a feasibility study on a proposed band office.

Council approved the partnership Monday as part of an application to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund, which supports studies for sustainable community buildings.

The study would assess construction approaches, operating costs and environmental performance for a potential energy-efficient band office on the First Nation’s urban reserve in North Battleford.

“In this case, we do have agreements with Red Pheasant around infrastructure. …using our water, for example, we maintain roads, that kind of thing. So, we do fit the qualification of partner in this,” said Randy Patrick, the city manager.

He added that the City’s role is limited to supporting the application and carries no financial obligation.

“There is no specific benefit to the city. There is no consequence to the city,” he said.

“If we can help local First Nations to get some funding, it’s a gain partnership.”

Under the agreement, the City will designate a contact, provide a council resolution endorsing the partnership and submit required documentation for the application.

Red Pheasant Cree Nation will lead the application and retain full decision-making authority over the study, including project management and use of any funding.
