Eggstravaganza

Annual Easter egg hunt goes off the grass and into the pool in North Battleford

Apr 1, 2026 | 11:18 AM

A line of children gathers at the edge of the wave pool, small bags clutched in their hands.

For a moment, everything is still, then the signal comes, and they surge forward, splashing into the water as brightly coloured eggs scatter across the surface.

“It’s kind of a mad rush to get as many eggs as they can,” said Khristopher Wisner, aquatics manager for the City of North Battleford.

The scene is part of the city’s annual “Eggstravaganza,” an Easter event held at the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre this Saturday that combines a traditional egg hunt with a free afternoon at the pool.

“We’ve been doing it for years, many, many years,” Wisner said.

The event is designed with families in mind. Children are given bags and invited to collect “thousands” of plastic eggs, which are both hidden around the pool deck and dropped into the water. After gathering them, the eggs can be turned in for prizes.

Among them are a handful of special finds.

“There’s five, if I remember correctly, golden eggs that they can hand in and they’ll get a special prize,” Wisner said, adding he prefers to keep the reward a surprise.

While the egg hunt is the main attraction, the afternoon extends beyond the scramble.

From 1 to 3 p.m., the aquatic centre opens its doors free of charge, with slides, waves and other features running once the egg drop wraps up.

In recent years, organizers have also adjusted the format to encourage more exploration.

Instead of simply dropping all the eggs into the water, some are now tucked around the deck, turning the event into more of a search than a race.

“Watching the kids go around on deck and actually searching for them is, I think, they have a little more fun with it that way, too,” Wisner said.

For him, the excitement never gets old, especially in the moments just before the rush begins, when anticipation builds across the pool.

“Everybody seems to get quite excited,” he said.

As another Easter weekend approaches, Wisner said the goal remains simple.

“I hope everybody comes out to have a great time, enjoy the pool, and gather as many eggs as they can.”
