TRANSITION UNDERWAY

School divisions end partnership with North Battleford’s Sākewew High School

Mar 30, 2026 | 3:46 PM

Living Sky School Division and Light of Christ Catholic Schools have confirmed the conclusion of their partnership with Sākewew High School in North Battleford.

Both divisions acknowledged the role Sākewew High School plays in supporting Indigenous students and families. They highlighted that this announcement may raise concerns for the community.

“The original partnership was created to expand access to culturally responsive academic, spiritual, and holistic supports for Indigenous students. Over time, both provincial school divisions have developed strong internal capacity in Indigenous education, including enhanced student supports, programming, and community relationships. With this growth, the shared governance structure established in the agreement is no longer required for either division to meet these needs effectively,” the divisions wrote in a statement.

This is an administrative decision that does not decide what will happen to Sākewew High School in the future. The First Nations Education Authority (FNEA) maintains authority over the school’s operations; they may choose to continue independently or through new partnerships.

A 14-month transition period is now underway to maintain stability for students and families, with no disruptions expected.

“Both divisions remain fully committed to Indigenous education, to reconciliation, and to respectful, ongoing relationships with FNEA, the Battlefords Tribal Council, and local First Nations communities. We also recognize the broader history in which education decisions affecting Indigenous students have sometimes been made without meaningful voice,” the statement reads.

As the transition moves forward, Living Sky School Division and Light of Christ Catholic Schools say they are committed to respectful communication while providing timely information.
