Battleford council considers bylaw change to accommodate new McDonald’s

Mar 17, 2026 | 11:38 AM

Battleford’s mayor is expressing enthusiasm as a new business looks to expand its presence in the community.

At the March 16 meeting, Northbound Planning presented a request to council seeking a discretionary amendment to the town’s zoning bylaw.

“The reason that came to council tonight is the golden arches sign for McDonald’s. It’s too high to what the town allows in our procedural and zoning bylaws,” said Mayor Ames Leslie.

The current regulation limits freestanding pylon signs to a maximum height of 33 feet. The incoming business is requesting approval to increase that limit to 50 feet.

The proposal submitted features a standard restaurant sign design mounted on a metal pole base, positioned on the southeast corner of the site across from Tim Hortons.

“I’m excited; it’s something we’ve been working on for a long time. If you follow the development permit, the McDonald’s name has been in those reports for about six to eight months.”

If the zoning bylaw amendment is approved during the next regular council meeting on April 6, the project will move forward.
