Man faces 20-plus charges after RCMP seize guns, drugs, thousands of rounds of ammunition

A large cache of firearms, ammunition and illicit drugs seized during a search by police on Thunderchild First Nation is at the centre of more than 20 charges laid against a 37-year-old man.

Turtleford RCMP executed a search warrant at a residence on March 4. As part of an ongoing investigation, they seized a loaded handgun, an illegally modified firearm and thousands of rounds of ammunition. 

Police also reported finding numerous firearm parts, including a loaded barrel capable of firing, along with a butterfly knife and nun chucks. 

Investigators said officers additionally seized significant quantities of suspected drugs, including about 400 grams of methamphetamine, roughly 33 grams of crack cocaine and approximately 26 grams of cocaine. 

As a result of the investigation, Spencer Wapass, 37, of Thunderchild First Nation faces more than 20 charges under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The charges include multiple counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking and trafficking involving methamphetamine, crack cocaine and cocaine. 

Wapass is also charged with weapons-related offences, including possession of a restricted or prohibited weapon with ammunition, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unsafe storage of a firearm. 

Additional charges include possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of a weapon contrary to an order and tampering with a serial number. 

RCMP said Wapass is already in custody after being arrested March 2 on an outstanding warrant with assistance from the Saskatchewan RCMP Critical Incident Response Team. 

He is scheduled to appear in St. Walburg provincial court on March 17.
