Seven years in the making: Battleford band releases debut single

For Audi and Kriss Atcheynum, music has always been part of everyday life. 

Both grew up on Sweetgrass First Nation, where classic rock and old country filled their homes. Those early influences continue to shape their sound today. 

“I want to keep that spirit of rock and roll going alive; classic rock, that’s nostalgic for me,” said Kriss.

Now, the couple is sharing that passion through their band, Hartz Roller. Based in the Battlefords, the group also includes bandmates Reg Whitecalf and Mike Martin and together, they have released their debut single, Let Me Love You.

The Song’s beginning was simple, starting with a quiet night at home. 

“The way that we came up with it was him and I in our living room one night,” explained Kriss. “He got his guitar out and was kind of strumming through chords.” 

From then on, the song was created, but it was still missing one aspect: a voice. 

“I came up with the chord progression for the whole song, but no lyrics or melody,” Audi added. “Kriss came up with the melody and lyrics.” 

After recording a rough draft, the track was sent to their bandmate Reg Whitecalf, who added the lead guitar parts and helped shape the feel of the song. While the writing came together quickly, finishing the track took much longer. Over the past seven years, Audi and Kriss worked to refine the project and bring it to release. 

The lyrics share a story about having romantic feelings for someone but not knowing if they feel the same in return.  

“A lot of people can relate to having a crush on somebody. So that’s the way it felt with a little bit of personal inspiration, but everybody can relate to that,” said Kriss.  

For the pair, the creative process itself felt natural. The biggest challenge came afterward, learning how to produce and promote their own music. 

“The only challenging part was just learning how to self-produce yourself, promoting ourselves, getting ourselves on the radio, said Audi. “Just a learning curve, but I enjoy doing it.” 

With their first single now released, the band hopes their music resonates with listeners who share their love of classic rock and heartfelt storytelling. They also plan to keep writing and releasing original music as they continue to grow their sound.
