WARMAN CHEER CLASSIC

North Battlefords Cheer teams place at Warman Cheer Classic

The Warman Cheer Classic took place over the weekend with a few teams from North Battleford competing. 

Aerial Cheer Athletics sent their U12 team Nova as well as their U16 team Eclipse, and John Paul II had their team in the scholastic division. 

John Paul II’s team won the competition after hitting zero on both of their runs. The run on day one counted towards 30 per cent of the total score, while day two counted towards 70 per cent. 

Aerial Athletic Director Rena Fauchon, who also helps with the John Paul II team, said that they “brought it 110 per cent” through the competition, especially on their second run. She mentioned that there were questions on whether JPII could improve their performance, which they were able to on the way to the win.

John Paul II wasn’t Fauchon’s only squad to hit zero on both of their runs. Nova also made no mistakes on either of their runs and ended up with a third-place finish. This is the third time Nova has finished in third place at a competition this year. 

When asked about the pressure hitting zero and following up the performance, Fauchon mentioned that she and the coaches don’t tell the teams where they are in the competition. 

She noted that teams can hit zero and still not be in position to win, so not telling them where they are in the rankings can help keep the pressure off. 

While team Eclipse wasn’t able to place in the top three, they did receive outstanding performance.

As the cheer season winds down, John Paul II looks ahead to the provincial championships in Saskatoon on March 21, and Aerial Cheer Athletics prepares for the All-Star Cheer Extravaganza on April 10-11 in Edmonton. 

The team will also be holding a cheer showcase on March 28 at the NationsWEST Field House with all their teams performing. Admission is free, as they aim to show the community what cheer in the Battlefords is all about.
