Meadow Lake Broncos chase SaskAlta title after dominant 15–1 season

The Meadow Lake Broncos spent the winter piling up wins and now the season has carried them to the doorstep of a championship.

After finishing the regular season with a 15–1 record, the Senior AA Broncos powered through two playoff rounds and now find themselves in the best-of-seven SaskAlta Hockey League finals, with the series tied 1–1.

“The season went really well,” head coach Winston Morin said.

The numbers behind the run show just how dominant the Broncos have been.

Meadow Lake sits atop the league standings after scoring 126 goals while allowing just 42, giving the team a league-best +84 goal differential.

Leading the Broncos’ offence is forward Ashton McIntyre, who captured the SaskAlta scoring title with 72 points in 24 games – an average of three points per game.

“But really every player had a good season, and things have been going good. We’re just trying to finish it off with a championship.”

In goal, Jared Lafond and Dylan Twidale have anchored the Broncos, each posting save percentages above .900 this season. Twidale leads the league with a .943 save percentage.

“Our goaltending has been really good,” Morin said.

One of the Broncos’ defining moments came on the road in Marwayne, Alta., where the team delivered one of its most complete efforts of the year – a 5–0 shutout victory to clinch the playoff series.

“According to the assistant coaches, they had one of our best games of the season,” Morin said, noting he wasn’t behind the bench that night. “Good defence, good goaltending, and just attention to detail the whole game.”

For Morin, who has coached the Broncos since 2016, the success has been building for years.

The core of the roster has stayed largely intact, and that continuity has helped the team find its rhythm at the right time.

“So this year they’re all kind of in their prime, hence the successful season.”

Unlike professional leagues, players in the SaskAlta circuit balance hockey with full-time jobs, something Morin said makes the commitment even more impressive.

“It’s a working man’s league, so these players sacrifice a lot of time,” he said.

The team has also benefited from strong support at home. A new rink in Meadow Lake has boosted excitement around the club, while playoff crowds have continued to grow as the Broncos push deeper into the postseason.

“And the fans have been great, of course,” Morin said. “Things are getting better in the playoffs here; the crowds have been getting larger all the time.”

With the finals underway, the Broncos are sticking to the same routine that carried them through the season – one weekly practice and preparation for weekend games.

Now, with the championship within reach, the message inside the Meadow Lake dressing room is simple.

“We’re trying to finish it off with the championship,” Morin said.

The series continues Saturday, March 14, at Moeller Hometown Arena inside the Co-op Centre in Meadow Lake. The Broncos will host the Bonnyville Sr. Pontiacs, with puck drop set for 8 p.m.
