North Stars fall 4-2 to the Humboldt Broncos in Nutrien Division showdown

Feb 27, 2026 | 11:49 PM

The Battlefords North Stars allowed three goals in the third period to the Humboldt Broncos and fell 4-2, losing their second straight game. With the Yorkton Terriers win over the Nipawin Hawks, the North Stars fell to third place in the SJHL.

The North Stars outplayed the Broncos in the first period, more than doubling them in shots, 16-7. Both teams had a powerplay opportunity in the first period, but neither team was able to capitalize, and the game went scoreless into the second frame.

After one: Tied 0-0

Just under halfway through the first period when the North Stars were pressuring, Carter Geysen’s shot was saved by Brady Holtvogt before the rebound went back to Geysen who circled around in the zone close to the slot and fired the puck past the blocker of Brady Holtvogt. Geysen’s 16th goal of the season made it 1-0 at the 8:51 mark.

At 14:39, Kai Holowachuk put a shot on from the point, which was stopped by the pad of Spencer Michnik, but Gabriel Kaminski picked up the rebound before bringing it to his forehand and sliding it past Michnik to tie the game up at one.

The Broncos got a powerplay opportunity late in the period, but the North Stars killed it off to keep the game tied heading into the final 20.

After two: Tied 1-1

Just 22 seconds into the period, Oliver Phillips won an offensive zone draw to Logan Flint, who scored top shelf to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead with his ninth goal of the season.

After a whistle at the 3:49 mark after Josh Knittig was knocked down, North Stars captain Anthony Campbell retaliated with a cross check to Kayson Christian. Campbell was handed a 10-minute game misconduct as well as a match cross check penalty.

Marik Mamic went at Campbell afterwards and took a game misconduct penalty, making the first two minutes of Campbell’s five-minute major, four on four.

The North Stars got on the board at four on four when Raiden Zacharias found Drew Williamson with a cross-crease pass, and Williamson scored his 14th of the season to tie things up at two at the 5:35 mark.

After Mamic got back on the ice, the Broncos had three minutes of power play time, but the North Stars were able to kill it off.

However, Gabriel Kaminski scored his second of the season past the blocker of Michnik to give the Broncos the 3-2 lead at 9:36.

At 13:22, a shot squeaked past Michnik and Christian knocked it in. Christian’s first SJHL goal was the insurance marker on the Broncos 4-2 victory.

Final score: 4-2 Broncos

The Broncos avoided their sixth straight loss, while the North Stars fell in their second consecutive contest.

The teams will face off once again in North Battleford on Saturday. The Ultra Print pregame show begins at 7:00 pm. The puck drops for Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey at 7:30 on CJNB/CJNS.
