Four Canadian divers advance to finals at World Cup in Montreal

MONTREAL — Four Canadian divers earned berths in the finals of their events on Thursday at the Montréal World Cup.

Benjamin Tessier of Laval, Que., and Matt Cullen of Rosemere, Que., were in the first group to qualify for the men’s 10-metre tower event.

“My last competition was six or seven months ago, so it’s been a while,” said Tessier. “I did feel a little rusty, but after one or two dives, I was back in the groove.

“I felt like I was in it, and that I found my bearings once again. Now I just need to fine-tune things a little more.”

Calgary’s Margo Erlam and Sonya Palkhivala of Pointe-Claire, Que., advanced in the women’s three-metre springboard.

Reaching the finals at the World Cup in Montreal also qualifies the divers for the Beijing Super Final in early May.

The World Aquatics Federation confirmed Thursday morning that the only other World Cup — set to take place next week in Zapopan, Mexico — had to be cancelled due to recent violence that had affected the region.

The Montreal competition’s results will therefore be the only ones that count toward the qualification process for the upcoming event in China.
