Dylan Larkin, John Gibson lead Red Wings to 2-1 overtime victory vs. Senators

OTTAWA — Dylan Larkin scored in overtime but John Gibson was the real hero as the Detroit Red Wings edged the Ottawa Senators 2-1 on Thursday.

Larkin beat Senators goalie Linus Ullmark on his backhand with 3:10 remaining in overtime.

It was Larkin’s second goal of the game after he tied it 1-1 for Detroit (34-19-6) on a power play in the second period.

Gibson kept the Red Wings in the game, making 26 saves.

Captain Brady Tkachuk opened the scoring for Ottawa (28-22-8) in the first period.

Detroit tied the game 1-1 with a power-play goal early in the second when Lucas Raymond fed Larkin at the side of the net and he one-timed it past Ullmark.

Just over two minutes later Simon Edvinsson stepped into Tkachuk. The Senators forward’s stick bounced up and hit him in the face. Tkachuk dropped to the ice and Dylan Cozens jumped to his captain’s defence. Edvinsson and Cozens were both sent to the box.

Tkachuk returned to the ice before play resumed and skated to the penalty box to confront Edvinsson drawing a 10-minute misconduct. Once in the box, Tkachuk continued to voice his displeasure.

Gibson made a number of big saves in the opening minutes, with his best being a stick save on Drake Batherson.

Michael Rasmussen appeared to give Detroit the early lead, but the Senators challenged the play, and a video review confirmed the Red Wings were offside.
