Battlefords Youth Soccer Inc. set to host Futsal Sask Cup this weekend

For the first time, North Battleford will be hosting the Sask Cup for Futsal with games being held at John Paul II Collegiate as well as the NationsWEST Fieldhouse from Feb. 27 – March 1. 

The U12 boys, as well as U14 boys and girls divisions, will be held at John Paul, while the U16 boys, both U18 teams, as well as the adult male and female divisions will be at the field house. 

“We’re very excited to host the Saskatchewan Soccer Association’s Sask Cup for Futsal. It’s the first time we’ve ever hosted a futsal event of this magnitude in our community, which is amazing. It’s exciting for the (number) of athletes and both youth and adult athletes that will be coming to North Battleford this coming weekend to represent their club in this tournament,” said Battlefords Youth Soccer director Kat Huxley. 

There are 27 teams participating in the Sask Cup Futsal across the eight divisions, including three representing the Battlefords Futsal Academy.

“We’re very, very excited for that… We have a U16 boys team, U14 girls team, and a U12 boys team that will be playing this weekend for the first time ever in the Sask Cup Futsal,” said Huxley.

“Having three teams that will be able to participate in Futsal Sask Cup just shows how much our kids want to continue to learn and grow in both soccer and futsal in our community – that we’re diving right into the deep end by entering teams into this and having an academy for the first time regarding football or directly related to football.” 

The Sask Cup isn’t the end of the road for all the teams. The winners of the adult division will move on to represent Saskatchewan at the Futsal National tournament in Calgary on April 8-12.  

The club and fieldhouse hosted the Little Legends Cup about a month ago, which has helped them with the preparation.

“It also built our confidence as a small community to host such a tournament of this capacity. Knowing that the adult teams are going to nationals, the expectation that they have when they come here playing to see who will go to nationals is a high expectation. They don’t want to come here and not have the best of the best,” Huxley said. 

The Futsal Sask Cup marks the near end of the season, as the club has just a couple more tournaments left on the indoor turf. The Slush Cup in Edmonton is going on at the same time as the Futsal Provincials, then the Sask Cup provincials take place in Moose Jaw from March 13-15.
