176 km/h alleged impaired flight leads to charges for Saltcoats man: RCMP

Feb 24, 2026 | 3:57 PM

A 22-year-old man from Saltcoats is facing several charges after Battlefords RCMP say a vehicle reached 176 km/h and fled from officers on Highway 29.

Police say officers spotted the vehicle travelling north at a high rate of speed around 11 a.m. on Feb. 21 and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver allegedly failed to stop and continued along the highway, later turning onto a rural road and maintaining dangerous speeds despite winter conditions.

Additional officers later located the vehicle travelling southbound on Highway 29.

After it turned into a dead-end rural road, police deployed a tire deflation device at a nearby intersection. The car struck the device, left the road, and stopped near the edge of a frozen body of water.

Mounties, assisted by RCMP Police Dog Services, contained the scene as three men exited the car. Two were arrested and released without charges.

The third, identified by police as the driver, ran toward the middle of the frozen water but was followed and arrested.

Now, the 22-year-old accused is charged with flight from police, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
