Meota Combines prepare for second round of playoffs vs Langham Vikings

The Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League playoffs are well underway, and the semi-finals are coming up.

After sweeping the Glaslyn North Stars in the first round, the Meota Combines are set to face off with the Langham Vikings in an upcoming best-of-five series to advance to the finals.

Although they did sweep the first round, it did not come without adversity. 

“Both games were tied late, and we were actually losing 4-0 in game two and came back and won. We’re still battling the injury bug here…That’s kind of tough, but we’ve got that next man up mentality right now. It’s something we’ve had to deal with in the past,” said team manager and forward Aaron Cadrin. 

After going down 4-0 in that second game, the Combines scored four straight goals in the third period. A back-and-forth third frame ended with a 7-6 Combines win to take the series.

With some injured forwards, Cadrin said they’ll be counting on everyone.

“We do have a lot of good depth, a lot of good middle-six forwards, but we’ve got three or four of them hurt right now. So that’s putting more of an emphasis on our top line and for our depth guys to step up.” 

Over the two games, the Combines got goals from 10 different players. Quinn Cubbon led the way on the scoresheet with three goals in the two games. 

Moving forward into the series against Langham, the team is expecting a similar style of play to the last series.  

“We’re a little bit faster. We got a little more top-end talent when everyone’s there, but they’re a physical team and, they’re a tough physical team and, they grind it out the whole sixty minutes,” said Cadrin. “They’re going to be physical. They’re going to be playing us hard, but I’m hoping that our speed and skill can overcome that, especially on the big guys.” 

The series kicks off on Feb. 21 when the Combines host the Vikings at the Access Communications Centre. Puck drop is at 8 p.m.
