‘Welcome, Costco!’: Signage appears at proposed Lloydminster site as project moves forward

A long-anticipated Costco appears to be one step closer to reality in Lloydminster, with new signage now posted at a southwest development site confirming plans for the major retail warehouse.

A sign recently installed along 75 Avenue and 19 Street identifies the site as the future location of a proposed Costco, offering the clearest public indication yet that the project is moving forward locally – even as the company itself has not issued a formal announcement on its website.

According to a Government of Alberta project listing, the proposed development would see Costco build on a 19.6-acre parcel on Lloydminster’s west side. Plans outline a warehouse of approximately 160,000 square feet with about 900 parking stalls.

The development remains listed as “proposed,” with no confirmed construction timeline or opening date publicly available. A building permit for the project was issued by the City of Lloydminster in late 2025.

Still, local officials say the visible signage and permitting mark an important milestone.

“For the chamber, this development is an important step in advancing our vision of a strong, diversified economy that supports long term business success and ongoing investment,” said Jackie Tomayer, president of the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce.

“Costco’s move to Lloydminster shines a brighter spotlight on our city, reinforces confidence in our market, and encourages additional businesses and entrepreneurs to see the potential here,” she said.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers also welcomed news of the planned development following the installation of the sign at the site.

“Like many residents, I was pleased to see the recently installed sign at the southwest worksite confirming Costco’s planned arrival in Lloydminster. On behalf of our community, let me be among the first to say, ‘Welcome, Costco!’” Aalbers said in a statement.

“A retail development of this scale has the potential to be transformative for our city. It will complement the strong range of local businesses and services already operating here, while attracting increased regional traffic and investment.

“This is a significant and exciting step forward for Lloydminster’s continued growth and economic momentum.”

The proposed warehouse would fall within the retail sector as a big-box store development led by Costco Wholesale Canada Ltd., according to project details.

Costco has not issued a formal announcement about the Lloydminster location. The company stated on its website that “we cannot comment on locations that will be opening more than three months from today.”
