Battlefords Citizens on Patrol unveil new patrol vehicle

Battlefords Citizens on Patrol Program introduced a new patrol vehicle during the North Stars home game Saturday night.  

The purchase of the 2025 Jeep Compass was made possible due to a $40,000 donation by Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC) and a portion of COPP’s own reserves.

The chairperson for the program said the Jeep will be beneficial to COPP patrollers who have concerns about using personal vehicles. 

“They’re concerned that they might get targeted. While that hasn’t been an occurrence to our knowledge, it’s still a precaution,” said Doug Fehr. “So, this allows the patroller to use a marked vehicle that’s not their own.”

Having an easily identifiable patrol also helps reassure residents. 

“For example, if we’re out patrolling at one o’clock in the morning, if it’s a personal or private vehicle, some people might be a little bit concerned as to what’s going on, but when there’s a logo on it, that allays those concerns,” Fehr said. 

The last vehicle BATC provided a grant for was a two-year lease in 2023. As a replacement, COPP was able to fully purchase a new patrol vehicle.

“It provides us certainty and it’s also much more cost-effective use of dollars. We think it’s a more efficient use of funds for BATC as well as for ourselves,” he said. 

Along with BATC, many local sponsors will help to pay for operating costs including insurance, gas, and maintenance.
