Nardelli scores winner, North Stars take down Warman Wolverines 6-5 in shootout

In a comeback effort, the Battlefords North Stars beat the Warman Wolverines tonight, 6-5 in the shootout. In the sixth round, Alessio Nardelli scored the shootout winner, and the North Stars improved to 3-2 in the shootout. 

The game started with a scary moment for the North Stars when Drew Williamson took a skate to the face from Vincent Palmarin behind the Wolverines net. Williamson immediately went to the locker room and had to go to the hospital but eventually returned to the game.  

The Wolverines (11-28-2-3, 4th in Nutrien Division) got on the board first when there were a couple bounces in front, and Benett Leibel picked up the puck before scoring his sixth goal of the season to put the Wolverines up 1-0 at the 8:35 mark. 

A little over a minute later, Nate Crashley scored on a rush to give the Wolverines a 2-0 advantage at 9:43. 

The North Stars (28-11-3-2, 1st in Nutrien Division) got within one when Owen Nelson walked in on the left-hand side and shot the puck short side over the shoulder of Wolverines goalie Taye Timmerman at 10:14 to cut the deficit to 2-1.

After one: 2-1 Wolverines 

Nardelli tied the game up at the 3:29 mark, scoring top shelf on the powerplay. Nardelli’s 10th goal of the season knotted the game up at two, and he became the 11th North Stars player with double digit goals. 

The North Stars trend of allowing quick answers continued after Nardelli’s goal when Oliver Nottingham scored on a back door rebound to restore the Wolverines lead at 3-2 at 3:48. 

Less than two minutes later, Kanyan Unger extended his goal streak to five-games and made it 4-2 Wolverines at the 5:31 mark. 

At 11:19, Williamson, who returned to the game in the second period, entered the zone on the left side with speed before hitting a streaking Nelson in front. Nelson scored his second goal of the game to cut the lead to 4-3. 

Later, Anthony Campbell tied the game at four, picking the puck up in front of the net during a scramble and taking it across the crease and going backhand on Timmerman at 12:26. 

With less than five minutes to go at 15:10, Pherson Loehndorf restored the lead for the Wolverines, floating a puck on from the point that went top shelf past Michnik and Warman went up 5-4. 

After two: 5-4 Wolverines 

The North Stars pressured throughout the majority of the third period, overall outshooting the Wolverines 15-5 in the final frame. Finally, at 15:36, Finlay Klippenstein scored on a rebound to tie the game at 5-5, and the game went into overtime. 

After three: Tied 5-5 

The overtime period was back and forth, but the North Stars had more chances, leading the period 5-2 in shots. However, they weren’t able to get one past Timmerman, and the game went to a shootout. 

After overtime: Tied 5-5 

In the shootout, Unger was stopped by Michnik before Linken Fisher slid a puck through Timmerman’s five hole on the backhand. Carter Bergen responded by bringing the puck wide on Michnik and sliding the puck past him. 

After that, everyone went scoreless until round six when Nardelli slid the game winner through Timmerman’s five hole and the North Stars took the win. 

Final score: 6-5 North Stars 

The victory was the North Stars third straight win, and they have now won 12 of the 16 games they have played in 2026. 

The North Stars next contest comes on Feb. 10 when they head to Nipawin to take on the Hawks.
