Getting to know Battlefords North Stars forward Alessio Nardelli

Alessio Nardelli, a midseason acquisition, has been a part of the Battlefords North Stars organization since late November when he was picked up by the North Stars from the Lloydminster Bobcats of the AJHL.

Nardelli has 17 points (6G-11A) in 22 games with the North Stars. In his first few months with the team, Nardelli has been happy with the community support and the team in general.

“It’s been unreal. Definitely helps with what our team has been doing – we’re having a great year. There’s a lot of young guys too that the fans could be excited about for the next few years,” said Nardelli. “I don’t know if Battleford was expecting to be this good of a team this year, just with the amount of young guys we have on the team…but yeah, since I’ve come in, the confidence in the room that I’ve noticed has been really good and we all believe that we have a real chance to win this year.”

Originally from Laval, Quebec, Nardelli has also spent time playing hockey in the United States at Wyoming Seminary Prep and Prince Edward Island.

“Just meeting new people from all over the world is pretty cool. (I) played with a guy from Finland, which is cool. Then a bunch of Americans and Canadians. So, it was cool to meet people from all over the world.”

In Prince Edward Island, Nardelli played at Mount Academy with North Stars captain Anthony Campbell. The two lived together playing junior hockey and have stayed close ever since.

“The fact that I knew (Campbell) already, and that we had chemistry on the ice. It just helps going to a team where you already know someone rather than trying to integrate yourself in a group when you don’t know anyone,” said Nardelli.

“He played in Fort Mac my rookie year. So when they came to Lloyd, he came to my billet house, we went out for breakfast. Last year, I actually came to a game in Battleford to watch him play…little did I know I would end up playing here.”

As a kid, Nardelli also played soccer and field lacrosse. He played high levels in both, but eventually had to stop for hockey. He mentioned playing lacrosse at his prep school in grade 11, going to the semifinal in the state tournament that year.

When asked about pregame rituals, Nardelli said he likes to have a nap on game days and when getting ready, he always puts on his equipment on the right side before the left side. He also has a pregame handshake with Owen Nelson that they do every game before they head out onto the ice.

On the bus before games, Nardelli likes to stay loose.

“I don’t like to be too quiet, I think if I’m too focused, it just doesn’t really help. Then after the game, I rarely sleep on the bus. I like to play cards, hang out with the guys and it makes it way better when we win for sure.”

Nardelli described himself as more of a show guy than a movie guy, saying that he and Campbell are currently watching Landman as well as Chad Powers. They try to find shows, then finish them before starting a new series. He said that his favorite show of all time is Prison Break.

In terms of music, Nardelli tends to like a little bit of everything. “Before games, I kind of like rap just because it’s a little more upbeat. Then after games, I like country.”

Nardelli and the North Stars continue their season on Jan. 23 against the La Ronge Ice Wolves.
