Four unanswered goals lead North Stars to 4-1 win vs the Humboldt Broncos

After going down 1-0 in the first period, the Battlefords North Stars scored four straight in the second and third period to take down the Humboldt Broncos on the road to get back into the win column. With the win, the North Stars (23-8-3-2, 1st in Nutrien Division) are now just two points behind the Flin Flon Bombers for the first-place spot in the SJHL.

The Broncos (17-16-1-1, 3rd in Nutrien Division) got on the board first at the 2:06 mark of the first period. There was a scramble in front, and Logan Flint took advantage, wiring the puck past North Stars goaltender Kaeden Serpa to put the Broncos up 1-0.

Brady Holtvogt was solid in net during the first period for the Broncos. He stopped all 10 shots he faced in the first period to keep the North Stars at bay heading into the second frame.

After one: 1-0 Broncos

8:13 into the second period, Owen Nelson tied up the game at one with a short side shot from the right side past Holtvogt. Nelson’s 10th goal of the season made him the sixth North Stars player with double digit tallies on the season.

Later on at 16:45, Keegan Nash put a shot off the post before Alessio Nardelli came in and grabbed the rebound, firing it top shelf to put the North Stars up 2-1. They held onto that lead until the end of the period. After being down a goal after 20 minutes, the North Stars were up a goal after 40.

After two: 2-1 North Stars

It continued to be all North Stars on the scoresheet in the third period. After numerous powerplay opportunities on both sides with neither team capatalizing, the North Stars made it 3-1 at the 14:54 mark when Raiden Zacharias tried to find Kobe Sawyer in the slot. The puck ended up ricocheting off Sawyer’s skate and in to make it 3-1.

It was Sawyer’s 10th of the year, making him the seventh North Star this year to net 10 goals on the season.

Down two goals, the Broncos pulled the goalie with about three minutes left. At 17:49, Finlay Klippenstein knocked an outlet pass out of midair in the neutral zone and put it into the empty net. It was Klippenstein’s team leading 20th of the season, which also leads all rookies across the league.

After Klippenstein’s empty netter, the North Stars held on the rest of the game for the victory.

The win keeps the North Stars undefeated in regulation in 2026. They have won eight of their last 10 games to get within two points of first place in the SJHL.

This weekend, the North Stars will have a pair of games with the La Ronge Ice Wolves at home. It marks the first time the North Stars will face off with La Ronge this season as they look to keep climbing and reach the top spot in the league.
