BHP issues update on Jansen project; Stage 1 now 75% complete

Jan 20, 2026 | 9:45 AM

BHP has issued an update on the Jansen potash project in their operational review for the half-year ended Dec. 31.

The company issued the update late Monday afternoon.

“The Jansen potash project in Canada is on track to begin production in mid-2027,” the statement read.

“Jansen will be a long life, low cost and scalable asset that will add a new, future facing commodity to BHP’s portfolio, which we expect will generate value for shareholders for many decades.”

The report states that Stage 1 of the Jansen mine includes design, engineering and construction of an underground potash mine, and surface infrastructure. BHP said Stage 1 has the capacity to produce 4.15 metric tonnes of potash.

That phase is described as 75 per cent complete at a cost of $8.4 billion.

That’s higher than the $7 to $7.4 billion forecast last July, and when the project was approved in 2021, the project was expected to cost $5.7 billion.

According to BHP, Stage 2 of the project will include the development of additional mining districts, completion of the second shaft hoist infrastructure, expansion of processing facilities, and addition of rail cars to facilitate production of an incremental 4.36 metric tonnes of potash.

That part of the project is described as 14 per cent complete, and an update is expected in the fourth quarter. The first target production date is in the fiscal year 2031.
