The Battlefords North Stars failed to win their eighth straight game, falling 6-5 to the Warman Wolverines at home in overtime. Wolverines captain Vincent Palmarin scored the game winner just 23 seconds into the overtime period.

While the North Stars (22-8-3-2, 1st in Nutrien Division) fell in overtime, they remain in second place in the SJHL with the Weyburn Red Wings loss to the Melfort Mustangs.

The game started with fireworks when Pherson Loehndorf hit Gavin Granger with a knee-on-knee, starting a fight with most of the players on the ice. Nobody dropped the ice, but Granger and Riley Rich-Holden wrestled to the ground while North Stars’ Carter Geysen and Wolverines’ Ethan Dundas were also involved. Granger and Rich-Holden were assessed with 10-minute misconducts on top of roughing penalties.

At the 4:50 mark of the first period, Pherson Loehndorf got the Wolverines on the board first. There was a scramble in front when North Stars goaltender Kaeden Serpa lost his stick. The puck found Loehndorf in the slot, and he put it through Serpa’s five hole to put the Wolverines up 1-0.

Just a few minutes later at 7:51, Trey Markus scored in his second straight goal on the breakaway to put the Wolverines up 2-0, forcing North Stars head coach Connor Logan to call a timeout.

The timeout helped get the North Stars back on track. Just over halfway through the first period at 10:19, Drew Williamson was on a two-on-one with Geysen. Williamson elected to shoot and put it right past the helmet of Wolverines goalie Nicholas Goodwin to make it 2-1.

Josh Knittig tied the game up at two, taking a pass from Anthony Campbell in the slot at the 17:44 mark and firing it past Goodwin to tie the game up at two. The goal extended Knittig’s league high point streak to 12 games.

After one: Tied 2-2

Just 1:22 into the second period, Carter Bergen restored the lead for the Wolverines, scoring on the backhand in tight to put Warman up 3-2.

The North Stars tied it up once again on the powerplay when Kobe Sawyer took a pass from down low and scored top shelf to make it 3-3 at 13:17 of the second period.

Just 32 seconds later at 13:49, Adam Konowalchuk gave the North Stars a 4-3 lead when he skated fast through the neutral zone on the left side, bringing it into the offensive zone and scoring short side over the shoulder of Goodwin.

Just under three minutes left in the frame at 17:02 with the Wolverines on the powerplay, Vincent Palmarin blasted a one-timer past Serpa. Palmarin’s sixth goal of the season tied the game for the Wolverines at four apiece.

After two: Tied 4-4

At the 8:40 mark of the final framer, Carter Bergen scored his eleventh of the season to give the Wolverines a 5-4 lead.

Cole Hines tied it up with a short side shot for his fourth of the season to tie the game up at five.

The score stayed tied at five and for the eighth time of the season; the North Stars went to overtime.

After three: Tied 5-5

Just 23 seconds into the overtime period, Palmarin doubled down, walking into the zone on the right side and scoring low blocker on Serpa to give the Wolverines (10-25-0-2, 4th in Nutrien Division) a 6-5 overtime win.

Final score: 6-5 Wolverines

It was the second time the North Stars and Wolverines went to overtime. The Wolverines have a 2-0 record in those games.

The North Stars will head to Humboldt on Jan. 20 to face off with the Broncos in another Nutrien Division matchup. The Ultra Print pregame show will begin at 7:00 pm Saskatchewan time, Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey will get going at 7:30 when the North Stars look to get back in the win column.
