Fire Department cautions homeowners to keep vents clear

The Humboldt Fire Department (HFD) is reminding residents to clear all vents around their homes.

It’s a message that extends across the province since recent windy weather has pushed snow closer to homes, which could become a hazard.

“With heavy snow and ice buildup, home exhaust vents can become blocked, creating a serious safety risk,” the department stated.

The largest concern for the HFD is potential carbon monoxide poisoning.

“Blocked fuel burning furnace, dryer, or hot system vents can cause carbon monoxide to back up into your home,” their release stated.

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that can be deadly.

According to the Government of Canada’s Health Infobase, common symptoms of mild to moderate carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, and nausea.

More severe cases could include symptoms like vomiting and loss of consciousness, or even coma or death.

The Humboldt Fire Department said homeowners can take matters into their own hands by regularly checking outside exhaust and intake vents. It’s also important to clear snow and ice away from vents for at least three feet. Vents should be visible and unobstructed.

Residents should also install carbon monoxide detectors in their home.

“A few minutes of prevention can protect your home and your family,” their release said.
