Meota Combines prepare for upcoming senior hockey provincials

The brackets for the senior hockey provincials were announced earlier this week and the Meota Combines will be playing in the tournament for the first time ever.

They will be playing in the ‘D’ bracket, something that Combines forward and team manager Aaron Cadrin said is exciting.

“They redid all the rules in D provincials this year, so they got a lot more entires. Kind of catered the rules to out league and our smaller town teams that wouldn’t have been able to enter under those rules. We’re excited even at the start of the year that we were able to enter into that.”

Meota will be taking on the Macklin Mohawks of the Sask West Hockey League (SWHL). Cadrin said that Macklin is going to be a tough team to beat but trusts that his guys are up to the task.

“They’re probably one of the favourites to win D. I know that they won a couple of years ago or won the league there a couple of years ago. But we know we got a got team and we know we can be competitive,” said Cadrin. “Definitely want to go far in this. We’re going to have to beat some really good teams and we might as well play a really good one off the start and see how we match up.”

Meota is one of two teams from the Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League (SPHL) that are participating in the tournament as they are joined by the Blaine Lake Raiders, who are playing in provincials for the first time in over 30 years. They will be facing off with the Shellbrook Elks of the Twin Rivers Hockey League (TRHL).

While Cadrin said that he isn’t overly happy with how the team has been playing, he doesn’t think they have quite clicked yet with a lot of new players.

“We have lost a couple of games just being short guys and not playing our best. We do still have some injuries here that are kind of lingering around and stuff. We’re hoping to heat up here going into playoffs and provincials,” he explained, adding that the tournament could help them get the wheels turning a bit more.

“Maybe playing more games, we can get to a groove and get to a little better shape and we’ll be firing on all cylinders going into playoffs.”

Meota, who is 6-4-0 (W-L-OTL) this year, will head to Macklin to play the Mohawks on Jan. 25. Game two of the three game set will be in North Battleford on Jan. 30 at 8 p.m., and game three would be on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. if necessary.
