Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks to reset Canada-China relationship in Beijing
Prime Minister Mark Carney landed in Beijing on Wednesday as his government seeks to rebuild Canada’s fractured relationship with China in its push to expand non-U.S. trade.
The trip marks the first visit by a Canadian prime minister to China in eight years, following a lengthy period of damaging diplomatic and trade tensions.
Those issues prompted the Liberals in 2022 to brand China a “disruptive global power” that does not share Canada’s values, but Canada is shifting its China policy with U.S. President Donald Trump upending the global economic order with his tariffs.
Carney is in Beijing with several members of his cabinet, including Energy Minister Tim Hodgson and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand.
