Warmer weather on the way for next week

Jan 9, 2026 | 3:15 PM

After a chilly December and a cool start to 2026, Saskatchewan will finally catch a bit of a break.

The province will soon see warmer weather, thanks to a ridge of high pressure moving in from the west.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist James Colangelo said the ridge will usher in warm air from the Pacific and southeastern United States.

“Saturday evening, things will start to warm up and then by Sunday, you could see temperatures above 0 C for most of the province, and that will continue for most of the week,” Colangelo said.

We could see a mix of precipitation next week in parts of the province. Colangelo said after the ridge of high pressure moves through the province, it will be followed by systems that form in northern Alberta or the southern Northwest Territories.

“As those systems slide down the edge of the ridge, from northwest to southeast. There’s some potential for snow in northern Saskatchewan and freezing rain in central and northern Saskatchewan as well.”

Colangelo said that could sneak into the province in a couple of different waves. The current forecast shows the northeast could see some mixed precipitation in the middle of next week, while areas like La Ronge can expect some snowfall. North Battleford, Prince Albert, and Humboldt aren’t expecting much for precipitation over the next week.

Temperatures are expected to be above normal for all regions through much of next week, with a slight drop after that to more normal temperatures for this time of year. The normal high for this time of year is around –14 C, with a low of about –25 C. The northeast, PA, Humboldt, and La Ronge should see highs in the low single digits most of the week, with the North Battleford area hovering around 4 or 5 C for several days.
