North stars prepare for weekend

North Stars host Red Wings for second game before heading to Melfort to play the Mustangs

The Battlefords North Stars are looking for their fifth straight win tonight when they host the Weyburn Red Wings for the second straight game. In Thursday’s contest, the North Stars took down the Red Wings 9-5 backed by four-point performances from Anthony Campbell and Josh Knittig.

With the win, the North Stars’ record improves to 19-8-2-2 (Wins-Losses-Overtime Losses-Shootout Losses) and puts them ahead of the Nipawin Hawks to move into third place in the SJHL. A regulation win tonight would move the North Stars into second place.

The current second-place Red Wings aren’t going to just roll over. They currently sit first in the Bunge Division with a record of 21-10-1-1. The last time these two teams played a pair of games, the North Stars won the first game 5-3, before Weyburn came back and won 5-2 the next day.

Since the Prince Albert Raiders are keeping Steele Bass around, the North Stars have been on the hunt for another goalie. They have acquired 2006-born goaltender Spencer Michnik. Michnik has spent time with the Camrose Kodiaks of the AJHL, as well as the Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL.

He has WHL experience, appearing with the Seattle Thunderbirds between 2022-24. Michnik, who hasn’t played since Dec. 20 is expected to get the start against the Red Wings.

“We’re really excited to see Spencer tonight and integrate him into what we’re doing here,” said North Stars head coach Connor Logan.

After their second game against the Red Wings, the North Stars will head to Melfort on Jan. 10 to take on the Mustangs (11-16-1-2, 3rd in UPL division). The North Stars struggled early on against the Mustangs this year, but haven’t played them since early October.

In those two games, the Mustangs beat the North Stars 3-2 in a shootout in North Battleford, then 2-0 in Melfort. Owen Nelson, who won two championships with Melfort, had a goal for the Mustangs in that win. It will be his first game back in Melfort since the trade to Battlefords.

The Mustangs are 3-6-1-0 in their last 10 games, and have lost three straight heading into the weekend. They face the Yorkton Terriers on the road on Friday before hosting the North Stars.

The Ultra Print pregame show begins at 7 p.m. while the puck drops for the Napa Auto Parts North Stars hockey at 7:30 p.m. on both Jan. 9 against Weyburn and Jan. 10 against Melfort on CJNB/CJNS.
