Five-goal second period propels North Stars to 9-5 win over the Weyburn Red Wings

It was the fourth straight victory for the Battlefords North Stars (19-8-2-2, 1st in Nutrien Division), who got a 9-5 win over the Weyburn Red Wings (21-10-1-1, 1st in Bunge Division). It was the second straight game the North Stars mounted a comeback after heading into the second period down 3-1.

The North Stars got on the board first when Anthony Campbell intercepted a pass behind the net and scored a wraparound on Red Wings goalie Joey Rocha.

The Red Wings got one back just over thirty seconds later when Drew Molde received a pass in the slot from Callas Pierce and scored to make it 1-1. Just over halfway through the frame, Molde doubled down to make it 2-1.

Weyburn made it a 3-1 game when Jase McNichol scored post and in on the powerplay from near the point.

In the second period, Alessio Nardelli cut the lead to one with a curl-and-drag shot on the powerplay to make it 3-2. Pierce restored the two-goal lead for the Red Wings a couple minutes later on a two-on-one.

After Pierce’s goal, the rest of the period was dominated by the North Stars. At the 8:16 mark, Finlay Klippenstein received a pass from Raiden Zacharias in tight and scored his team leading 18th goal of the season to tie it at three.

Just over a minute later, Owen Nelson scored his second goal in as many games slotting the puck over the shoulder of Rocha to tie the game at four. Shortly after that, Campbell shot a puck on the powerplay that trickled past Rocha to make it 5-4 North Stars with their third goal in 2:24.

With less than four minutes to go in the frame, Keegan Nash was given time and space to walk into the zone. He did so and fired the puck top shelf for his first SJHL to put the North Stars up 6-4.

Less than halfway into the third period with the North Stars on the powerplay, Linken Fisher scored his eighth goal of the season to make it 7-4 North Stars. Less than a minute past the halfway mark of the period, Pierce scored his second goal of the game and fourth in two games, cutting the deficit to 7-5.

The Red Wings got a powerplay with less than seven minutes left to go in the third. Near the end of the man advantage, Campbell rushed the puck down the ice and found Josh Knittig in front, connected for a shorthanded goal in their second straight game.

After the North Stars got another penalty late in the period and the Red Wings pulled the goalie, Knittig brought it down and scored his second shorthanded goal of the game. Knittig’s two goals on the penalty kill were the North Stars league leading 9th and 10th shorthanded goals of the season.

The North Stars held on for the 9-5 victory to move into third place in the SJHL. The teams face off again on Friday. If the North Stars win in regulation, they would move ahead of the Red Wings into second place in the league.
