Preliminary hearing set for accused in Lloydminster triple homicide case

A preliminary hearing is scheduled later this month in the case of a man charged in connection with a triple homicide in Lloydminster in the fall of 2024.

Nakota Pooyak of Sweetgrass First Nation, faces three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Brent Peters, Matthew Peters and Brennan Peters.

A preliminary hearing is held to determine whether there is sufficient evidence for a case to proceed to trial.

According to the RCMP, officers were called to a residence near 50th Street and 47th Avenue in Lloydminster on Sept. 11, 2024, for a well-being check. Upon entering the home, officers located the three deceased individuals with gunshot wounds.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit assumed carriage of the investigation with assistance from Lloydminster RCMP.

Pooyak was charged on Jan. 18, 2025, and remains in custody.

The preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 27 in Lloydminster Provincial Court (Saskatchewan), with additional dates set for Jan. 28 and 29 at the Lloydminster Exhibition’s Aspen Room.

Pooyak has a history of criminality in Saskatchewan and Alberta and has previously being charged with weapons-related offences, flight from police, drug possession and aggravated assault among other charges.
