Battlefords snow crews work through winter challenges

Jan 6, 2026 | 5:26 PM

The Battlefords snow removal efforts have been in full force this winter, providing residents with clean and maintained streets.

Both city and town snow removal crews have been working tirelessly throughout the season, including over the holidays.

The public and intergovernmental relations coordinator for the city said she has seen mainly a positive response from residents so far this season.

“I think a lot of the public understands when you get a large accumulation of snow that falls in a quick period of time. Even if you’re expecting it, it still kind of catches people off guard a little bit,” said Candace Toma. “That includes our roadways crews, even if we’re expecting a snowfall.”

Acting Chief Administrative Officer for the town of Battleford said he has noticed complaints in regard to rutting on the streets.

“There’s been a little bit of challenges with some ridging of driveways… I know a bit of rutting issues were raised last night at the council meeting and council was of the belief that it was a short-term issue. The department is actively working to correct some of those service issues,” said Landon Chambers.

Currently the same issues are happening across the river in the city.

“Crews are working diligently to make sure that the city is all finalized and done by the end of this week, hopefully by Friday. That’ll prevent a great deal of ruts and whatnot occurring from a thaw and then a flash freeze again,” Toma said.

The city of North Battleford’s snow removal effort is dealt with in a priority fashion:

Priority one – cleared within the first three days following a snowfall. This group includes downtown Pioneer Avenue, Railway Avenue, Carlton Trail, Heritage Way, and 11th Avenue to the Hospital.

Priority two – cleared within seven days following a snowfall. This group is made up of collector streets which connect to priority one streets. Some collector streets include 110th Street, Diefenbaker Avenue, Douglas Avenue, and 19th Avenue.

Priority three – cleared after both priority one and two are complete. These streets are primarily residential and are only worked on during the no parking schedule.

Similar to the city, Battleford’s snow removal also works on a priority basis:

Priority one – hills, district care, and business centers.

Priority two – avenues.

Priority three – residential streets.

Residents are reminded to stay aware of when their streets will be cleared as crews are having a hard time maneuvering around parked vehicles.

“There’s a lot of people that think ‘somebody hasn’t come down in the past few weeks,’ maybe they’re thinking that it’s OK to park there, but it’s not. Those restrictions are in place as a standard for a reason,” Toma explained.

SGI also urges motorists to adjust their driving to match road conditions. Drivers are expected to slow down, increase following distance, avoid all distractions, and adjust their speed to accommodate road conditions.
