Man charged with murder after death of infant in Melfort

Jan 5, 2026 | 2:12 PM

A man faces a second-degree murder charge after the death of an infant in Melfort.

RCMP were called about an infant in medical distress at a home in Melfort Dec. 24.

Officers got to the scene and found EMS personnel attending to an unresponsive infant under the age of one.

The child was taken to the hospital.

The investigation determined that the infant’s injuries were suspicious in nature, and Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit (HIU) and Prince Albert Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) took control of the investigation.

The infant died in hospital four days later.

A 37-year-old man was arrested in Melfort on Saturday on one count of second-degree murder, and he made his first court appearance on Monday.

RCMP have not released the name of the infant in case a publication ban is ordered, and they say the victim and the accused are known to each other.
